The recent closure of Woods Brasserie in Cardiff Bay
On Sunday 23rdFebruary 2014 Woods Brasserie closed its doors for the very last time since it first opened almost fifteen years ago.
Woods moved into the Pilotage building in Cardiff Bay in 1999 and immediately built up a reputation as one of South Wales’ most popular restaurants. It has been a mainstay on the Cardiff dining scene ever since.
In 2013, Woods’ parent company, Knife & Fork Food, took the difficult decision not to renew the lease on the Pilotage building and the company are currently looking to relocate the restaurant elsewhere in the city.
This decision was taken for a number of reasons, principally taking into consideration the changing demographics of Cardiff Bay in the last fifteen years. After much discussion it was ultimately decided that the more casual character of the Cardiff Bay dining scene no longer suited the Woods brand.
The fact that Knife & Fork Food are also undergoing rapid expansion as a company has also led to this decision. In the last six years Knife & Fork Food have opened a number of South Wales’ most successful pubs and restaurants, including The Conway in Pontcanna and The Pilot in Penarth, both of which are the regions only entrants in the Michelin Pub Guide.
Whilst Woods plots its next course, the team is deployed to The Discovery to help facilitate the launch of what is Knife & Fork Food’s largest location to date, capable of serving up to 200 diners in one evening.
